Ceramische Vazen Stadhuis Almere — 1986/1987 — Ceramic — by Berend Strik

About the piece

Ceramische Vazen Stadhuis Almere (Ceramic Vases City Hall Almere, 1986/1987) is one of Berend Strik's earliest works in the collection, documenting the ceramic vase collection displayed in Almere's City Hall — designed by Rem Koolhaas.

This early work already shows the hallmarks of Strik's practice: the combination of photography with textile intervention, the interest in institutional and civic spaces, and the transformation of formal imagery through handmade additions.

The ceramic vases — objects that bridge craft and design, function and aesthetics — become subjects for Strik's investigation into how objects carry meaning. By adding textile layers to the photographic image of these vases, Strik creates a layered conversation between different artistic traditions: photography, ceramics, and textile art.

The pairing of Almere's City Hall ceramics from 1986/1987 with a 2026 City Hall photograph suggests a long-standing relationship between Strik and this particular civic institution — a documented engagement spanning nearly four decades.
