About the piece

Mothers and Snow (2025) is part of Berend Strik's exhibition Threads that Echo at Hopstreet Gallery, Brussels (4 September – 25 October 2025), subsequently shown at Hotel Arena, Amsterdam (31 October – 15 December 2025). The work was also featured at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in the group exhibition "Things I've Never Seen Before."

The exhibition explores themes of origin, memory, and shared human experience through Strik's signature fusion of photography and textiles. As Hopstreet Gallery describes: "The series about mothers, presented in another room, also relates to the idea of origin. By concealing some elements and accentuating others, these works exude a subtle, intimate atmosphere that is universally recognisable. Strik aims to evoke a sense of shared memories, a feeling like 'oh yes, my mother…' and 'we all have a mother.'"

The Belgian review La Libre described the exhibition: "In his new exhibition Threads with an Echo, Berend Strik explores the layers within images. By combining photography with textiles, he disrupts the fixed meaning of a photograph and creates space for new interpretations. The interplay of memory and material evokes an intimate, almost tangible experience: the image is not only seen but also felt."
