Internal Balance — 2016 — Mixed media on paper — by Berend Strik

About the piece

Internal Balance (2016) by Berend Strik addresses the concept of equilibrium within the self — the psychological and physical balance that humans constantly seek to maintain.

Balance is both a physical concept (not falling over) and a psychological one (mental health, equilibrium). Strik's textile interventions into images can be seen as acts of balancing — adding weight to one part of an image to create visual and conceptual equilibrium.

The internal nature of this balance is significant: it is not about external appearance but about the unseen, internal state of being. This connects to Strik's practice of revealing internal states through external additions — making the invisible visible.

Balance is also a formal principle in art — the distribution of visual weight across a composition. Strik's stitched photographs achieve a distinctive balance between the flat photographic ground and the dimensional textile additions.
