Brain Invaders — 2002 — Mixed media on paper — by Berend Strik

About the piece

Brain Invaders (2002) by Berend Strik suggests an encounter with something that penetrates the mind — an invasion of mental space that might be welcome (inspiration) or unwelcome (obsession).

The "brain invader" brings to mind science fiction imagery — alien entities that take over minds — but also the more mundane experience of ideas that lodge themselves in consciousness and won't leave. Strik's textile interventions could be seen as a physical counterpart to this mental invasion: they add something to the image that changes it permanently.

The brain is one of Strik's recurring subjects — his interest in neurology and the physical basis of consciousness connects to his insistence on the physicality of his artworks. Just as the brain processes information through physical changes, Strik's artworks change the physical surface of the photograph through stitching.
