Beeldbepalers De Balie x Mondriaan

How does an idea originate? How does something new come into being? How does the creative process work? During this episode of Beeldbepalers, which focuses on the work of Berend Strik, we reflect on these questions and explore the attribution of value to a work of art. After a work is created, value also emerges. How does this work? Birgit Donker, Director of the Mondriaan Fund, introduces the evening.

During the evening, Yoeri Albrecht will interview Berend Strik, and Juha van ’t Zelfde (Artistic Director of Lighthouse Brighton) and Maxine Kopsa (Curator, Founder, and Director of Kunstverein) will share their views on these topics. Jannah Loontjens (writer, poet, and philosopher) will analyze the evening, and there will be musical contributions from Frances-Marie Uitti, Morschi Franz, and Gerri Jäger and Raphael Vanoli of Knalpot. The presentation is hosted by Ianthe Mosselman.

Strik reflects on the role of an artist. He feels displaced in the art world. Is he on the right track, or is he merely working from ingrained habits? Is he still alert enough? To answer these questions, Strik seeks out artists and philosophers with whom he feels connected. He investigates the relationship between the creative space and the aesthetic views of artists.

De Balie presents the Beeldbepalers series in collaboration with the Mondriaan Fund. Within this series, prominent Dutch artists will have the opportunity to use De Balie as a laboratory for an entire evening. In collaboration with others, they present new work or cast their existing work in a new light. Jan Dibbets, Marlene Dumas, and Joep van Lieshout have already preceded him recently. De Balie and the Mondriaan Fund view these evenings as important moments in our time. The Dutch avant-garde of the arts, and thus the measure-makers within our society, emerge from their studios and share their thoughts on their work and this era in the presence of an audience.
