Hort auf scheibe zu machen

About the piece
Hort auf scheibe zu machen (German, possibly "Hide on the window pane" or similar, 2006) by Berend Strik uses German to suggest the act of hiding on or behind a window — the act of watching from concealment, of seeing without being seen.
The window is a threshold between inside and outside — a transparent barrier that allows observation while maintaining separation. To hide on the window pane is to occupy this liminal space, neither fully inside nor fully outside.
Strik frequently works with themes of visibility and concealment, the seen and the unseen. His textile interventions into photographs add layers that simultaneously reveal and conceal — covering part of the image while making other parts more prominent.
The German language title — for a Dutch artist working primarily in Dutch contexts — adds a note of cross-cultural observation: German as the language of neighbors, of shared European history, of the complicated relationship between the Netherlands and Germany.
